July 2002: We chartered out of Owase, Japan in a true commercial fishing rig with one of the best captains I have ever known. The boat is uncomfortable and pitches to the right but for the closest you can get to guaranteed offshore action, “The Owase Boat” always seems to deliver. Here’s a shiira (bull dolphin) we came across on our way to the tuna grounds. It was so big we had to harpoon it to get it on board. Japanese boats seldom come equipped with gaffs. Well, I guess we could have used a net on this bull but Greg wanted to harpoon it anyway…
