The crew of IGFA Angler’s Digest brings you light-tackle fishing for black marlin, blue marlin and sailfish on the Pacific side of Guatemala with record setting Capt. Chris Sheeder. We target billfish using a tease-up and pitch-back approach — pitching bridled ballyhoo and mackerel — we’re joined by Capts. Randall Gaines and Jason Brice aboard a custom 37 foot Merritt Sportfisher — the Release. For those of you unfamiliar with the accomplishments of Capt. Sheeder, he set a new record with 54 sailfish releases in one day…. all on the fly!
Guatemala offers much more than sport fishing. Historical Mayan ruins are still being discovered in this lush, tropical country where ancient traditions and cultures exist till this day. We take a few days to explore the local mountains and Lake Atitlan as well Antigua, the charming and historically significant former capital of Guatemala. It’s sheer beauty makes Guatemala a place you just have to experience for yourself.

Jeff Morrow released a world record striped marlin on flyrod (20lb test on the tippet)off Ecuador using a Cam
Sigler 14 wt flyrod. He was fishing with IGFA rep Pete Santini and Gustavo and Capt Edwin. The fish was released and was over 225lb by formula but is a “claimed” record rather than a “verified” record because of the release. There is no longer any need to kill these beautiful levithans!!
